Vendor Feature – Cakes for All Seasons, Lisa Parker

NMWE:
How did you become a part of this industry?

Lisa Parker:
I started my career as a caterer after graduating from the Cornell Hotel School many years ago. Over the years, I decided to focus on baking and then on wedding cakes. Five years ago I had my mid-life adventure and studied L’Art du Gâteau at the French Pastry School in Chicago. I returned to Maine and opened a cake studio.

NMWE:
What sets you apart? What is your most valued feature about your business?

Lisa:
Customization!  I’m always up for an adventure and am happy to create special dessert menus and cake flavors for couples and their families.

NMWE:
What keeps you passionate and motivated?

Lisa:
Trends change and there are always new things to learn about decorating cakes, building flavor profiles and celebrating weddings.

NMWE:
What are your desired types of couples?

Lisa:
Couples who enjoy desserts are my best clients.  Whether they want the drama of a large, multi-tiered cake or a small cutting cake and assorted sweets on a buffet, I’m excited to work with engaged couples who want a delicious ending to their celebration meal.

NMWE:
Do you have a past favorite wedding? If yes, why is it your favorite?

Lisa:
I had to think about this question a long time. Each wedding I work for is different and I love each of them for different reasons. One of the simplest cakes I ever did was for a gay classmate who got married the day the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage.  So much love went into that cake served on such an historic day.  Another cake featured a cake topper that the bride’s grandparents used on their cake; it was passed down to each bride in the family.  A 2014 swiss dot decorated cake was the last one my daughter helped me deliver before she moved to the West Coast.  I connect memories to my work and hope that my cakes become a memorable part of my clients’ weddings.

NMWE:
What is your best piece of advice or tip for couples planning a wedding?

Lisa:
Start the process early, make a budget and stick to it. That being said, pick one thing you’re willing to splurge on and go for it.  Hopefully that will be your cake and desserts!
